Meet Alondra and The Beautifully Ethical Future of Diamond Jewellery

Alondra by Lark & Berry Ethical Diamond Jewellery

We all know how unethical the diamond industry can be. We’ve seen the footage and read the stories about the horrors of mining, making us wary about the diamonds we see (and want). Unfortunately, it’s more difficult than we realise to determine which diamonds are mined ethically — and which are leaving a devastating trail of events for people and the planet. Typically, then, what happens is that we take one of two stances: We either ban diamonds from our jewellery for good, or we decide to turn a blind eye. (The heart wants what it wants.) Thankfully, there’s now a beautiful third stance — and it’s called Alondra.

Alondra by Lark & Berry

Created by Laura Chavez, the founder of Lark & Berry (the original #diamonddisruptor), Alondra is the result of the world demanding a new way to enjoy the luxury and beauty of diamonds. Created in a lab (along with other gemstones for Lark & Berry), Alondra’s sustainable diamonds have a clean creation story. And because they’re set in 18k recycled gold vermeil, along with other unique “offbeat” materials, they have a price point that is both attractive and accessible – The future of diamond jewellery is here.

Horizon Collection

Alondra’s launch collection, Horizon, is an exciting foray into all the possibilities that come with thinking outside of the box. Mixed with cultured black spinel, Horizon is cool and adventurous, the type of jewellery that makes a quiet statement, capable of drawing people in without having to say or do too much. It’s the new cool-kid jewellery — refined, unique, conscious. When asked about her inspiration for the Horizon Collection, Laura shares that she was “inspired by the beauty of looking out at a horizon in nature… as if you’re seeing forever.” The clean, distinct lines in the collection riff on that imagery: the moment where earth meets clear sky.

Double-Sided Designs

Endlessly creative, another unique design element Laura has woven into Alondra’s launch collection is that many of the pieces are double-sided, which means you can choose whether you want to reveal diamonds or the ultra-cool black spinel, which feels edgier and unexpected. Think of these double-sided pieces like the ultimate office-to-dinner jewellery. Of all the new pieces, Laura is currently crushing on the “classic-edgy appeal” of the Horizon Double-Sided Bracelet and the Horizon Trio Link Diamond Earrings, which look like something both Rihanna and Kate Middleton would wear to an event.

Ethical Jewellery

When asked why creating an ethical jewellery brand was so important to her, Laura said “The desire to do so of course began with Lark & Berry, which launched a little over 3 years ago. I just couldn’t believe the stories I heard about what it took to mine for diamonds, the people who were exploited…It didn’t make sense to me, so when I came across lab-grown diamonds, I knew it was the answer.” – Choosing to use only ethically sourced materials for her designs, Laura said “I think it’s important that everyone now thinks about making more ethical choices in all aspects of life… When it comes to diamonds, there was just no other option but sourcing as ethically as possible given the stakes are as high as people’s lives.”

Everlasting Shine

With Horizon on track to sell out, Alondra is already gearing up to launch its second collection, something that Laura says is allowing her to really let her “creativity run wild.” And with her creativity let loose, we can all rest assured that we’ll have plenty of new pieces to add to our “must-have” lists — each one, most importantly, created with diamonds that are so much more than just a “girl’s best friend.”
